||The arts—music, theatre, visual arts and dance—are an integral part of life at Saint James School. These offerings allow students to explore opportunities for self-expression and to experience the joy of creation. Through their involvement in the arts, our students develop greater empathy and understanding, gain new insights and learn how to collaborate creatively.
We offer many classes and extracurricular activities and all of our students are involved in the Fine Arts. Our offerings include:
Students are encouraged to approach visual arts with curiosity, creativity and an open mind. Studio Arts courses are grounded in a formal and academic fine arts tradition. Knowledge of theory is achieved through hands-on application and experimentation with a broad range of media.
Our award-winning Choir sings for weekly Chapel each Sunday and has performed in venues including the National Cathedral in Washington, DC and Carnegie Hall in New York City. The Choir performs a variety of music ranging from choral masterworks to spirituals and contemporary works.
Music Theory teaches students the fundamentals of how music is constructed and focuses on practical skill development in ear training, sight singing, and basic keyboard. AP Music Theory is offered for qualified students seeking to expand their understanding of harmony and music composition.
Our students are engaged in a variety of musical disciplines, from singing in the Choir to playing in a jazz, string or drum ensemble to participating in a capella groups. Many students also take private lessons with our diverse and talented music faculty.
Wellness, Art and Music (WAM)
During the studio arts portion, students are introduced to the fundamentals of art theory through drawing, painting, and printmaking. The students begin to develop a visual and conceptual vocabulary, producing thoughtful and deliberate works. During the music portion, students rotate through introduction to strings, wind and percussion instruments and have the opportunity to perform in an ensemble.
Our Mummers’ Society puts on a variety of plays and musicals through the school year. Participation is open to all students, regardless of their experience. The Mummers’ Society drama program exposes students to a range of theatrical styles and techniques.
Stage Crew is comprised of students who receive fine arts credit for designing, constructing, and painting stage sets. This crew builds everything from a medieval castle wall for "Saint George and the Dragon," to specialized sets for our spring musicals. We have approximately 50 volunteers who contribute to these projects throughout the year.
Dance is offered in the winter in our dance studios. While emphasizing the physical aspect of dance, classes accommodate the needs of a variety of students: beginners seeking a new experience, athletes working on agility and coordination, and more advanced students.
